I've been thinking about this for quite a while.
Let me ask you a question: Why do you want to go to college?
A lot of you are going to have the same answer: so you can major in a certain field of work, and use that information to make money in order to support yourself and your future family. That's fine and all of course, but why do we all think like this?
Isn't going to college for one thing: to gain knowledge? Whatever happened to people going to school, just because they wanted to LEARN something, not necessarily so they could get a degree in something?
This is one of the things that I hate about how the world works. You can't really enjoy life, not matter how hard you try. The fact of the matter is, you have to do what the world wants you to do in order to be successful; the world doesn't NEED any musicians, or artists, or poets to keep itself running; instead, it depends on doctors, lawyers, and stock brokers in order to thrive.
Personally, I'd love to be a musician; to grow up, with music around me at all times, would be bliss; there's not much more I would ask for. However, the sad truth is that if I decided to approach a degree in music, I would do so knowing that I would very well end up having to flip burgers just so I could support myself; being successful in the fine arts is hard work, and making it big rarely ever happens.
In the real world, I'm going to have to pursue something that I don't necessarily want to do; for example, being a doctor (I'm not very fond of blood, which is my main reason why I choose not to go into medicine). This isn't really something I like at all, but I know that there's not much of a choice but to live my life like this.
This post seemed to ramble a bit. I just wanted to say how I feel like most of the world's people are probably living their life in a huge lie, doing something they don't really want to do, and refusing to allow themselves to pursue what they really enjoy.
It sucks, but that's how the world works, I guess.

Well, doing something society expects you to do doesn't always have to be viewed as a bad thing. I, for one, enjoy learning about medicine and am excited to further my education to become a doctor in my future, despite the ridiculous and gruesome long hours. And in this case, I don't feel "being successful" is such a crime. The world needs doctors, lawyers, and stock brokers. Without them, where would we be now?
But I suppose I am maybe one in a hundred who actually love what I want to do. I agree with you that most people are really just too afraid to pursue a life they want; there are just too many setbacks to have a comfortable lifestyle.
